Finding what to wear can be quite the dilemma, from dressing up for the office to getting ready to run errands, it’s almost as if there’s never the right fit.

But what if getting ready didn’t have to be this hectic and you came up with a system that helps you get dressed quickly

What if you created a capsule wardrobe?

According to a poll by YouGov America, the average person takes between 11 minutes to 1-hour getting ready which sums up to 7.6–15 days a year.

Creating a capsule wardrobe can help you cut down those minutes in half by reducing your clothing options to the foundational pieces you need for an outfit.

Sounds great?

Then, Let’s explore what a capsule wardrobe is and how to build one

A capsule wardrobe, according to online fashion magazine Bust is the result of streamlining your existing wardrobe to the bare necessities, or at least to a reasonable number of pieces that can be mixed and matched and dressed up or down for various occasions, locations, and times of day.

A popular minimalist fashion trend, It can be created according to the seasons i.e fall, summer, winter, or your lifestyle phases. The only set requirement for building one is “that it contains your essentials”.

So now that we know what a capsule wardrobe is, let’s discuss how to build one

  1. Define your aesthetic: Since you’ll be cutting down your wardrobe to just a few pieces, it might as well be pieces you love right?

Take a few minutes, think about what you want to look like and how that fits into your lifestyle. Use apps like Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration. And once you’ve figured that out, it’s on to the next step.

2. Sort out your clothes: You want to separate your clothes into three piles. The pieces you love, the pieces that can form the basis of your outfits, and the pieces you have no need for.

Now, this may be tough but remember the essence of this exercise is to save yourself the stress of constantly not having any outfits with a wardrobe full of clothes.

3. Make a list of all the items missing from your wardrobe that you need and budget for them:

Quite a self-explanatory step, you should take stock of all the items missing from your closet that you need to create a desired look. Then, once you’ve made a list, budget for it and make purchases as you can.

4. Match pieces together to create several looks: Since a capsule wardrobe consists of fewer pieces of clothes it can feel like you’ll run out of outfits after just a few outings.

But this doesn’t have to be the case. The way out is to mix and match your pieces in several ways to create several outfits, that way you always have an outfit ready and spend even less time.

5. Be intentional with your shopping: When it comes to a capsule wardrobe the mentality is really quality over quantity. You want to pick out only clothing items you need and will wear more than once.

And buying anything and everything you see on the shopping rack will just not cut it. As that will have you back to the original problem of “full closet, nothing to wear.”

You should think of your clothing purchases as an investment and only buy items that you can use over a long period of time.

The essence of a capsule wardrobe is to have a wardrobe that speaks to your personal style and makes dressing up less of a hassle. So, make sure to be as honest as possible with yourself when picking out your pieces. Don’t try to imitate your favorite influencer or celebrity. Create a wardrobe that speaks true to you.
